InterLaced | Solo Exhibition | Belinda Rosee

In Conversation with Belinda Rosee….

InterLaced – Belinda Rosee

Weaving became part of my life in 2009, and, in the beginning, my desire to weave was born from a desire to fill my home with practical handwoven items. Things that I could hold, touch, use and enjoy on a daily basis.

No one warned me that weaving could take hold of your soul and fill your daily thoughts.

To be able to take strands of yarn and manipulate them to create a hard wearing floor rug, a beautiful table runner, functional tea towels, a softly draping shawl to provide warn neck hugs on cold Canberra days, or a gossamer transparency … truly inspirational.

InterLaced – Belinda Rosee

It wasn’t until 2014 when weaving took over my life completely.  I was given the tremendous opportunity of weaving cloth for Mr Geoffrey Rush and his portrayal of “Ra” in the movie “Gods of Egypt”.  To see something that I had woven, on the big screen, well, words just can’t convey how humbling that experience was.

Weaving brings me joy and centres me. From the winding of the bobbins to the throwing of the shuttle, I touch every inch of yarn that goes into my creations. A part of me remains with each and every piece of woven cloth.

Simply put, I weave because I must, it is a part of me, and it gives me great joy to know that something I have woven can bring enjoyment to another person. – Belinda Rosee….

An Insight into – A Class Act | Michael Winters CCE Exhibition

strathnairn-landscape-550

“A Class Act”

The work you see exhibited in The Woolshed Gallery, was created by my students attending ANU’s Centre for Continuing Education, Visual Arts Access Program. The work has been produced over the past four years.

I have held my “off campus” classes at Strathnairn for some 12 years. The venue is ideal becuase of it’s peaceful rural environment.

A Class Act Exhibition - 2

As an art school trained artist and having had the priveledge of a through grounding in art history, I am very aware of the diversity in the visual arts over time. In recent times we have seen a vast range of “isms” appear, ranging from Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Abstract Expressionism, Tachism to Pop Art.

So, using this knowledge, I construct my classes around “Themes”, the titles of some of these classes have been:

“Imaging if, Matisse, Van Gogh & a Medieval Icon Painter Had lived in Australia”

“Inviting Picasso & Bonnard into your Home”

“From Matisse’s Room to Your Room”

“Landscape – Taking the Rough with the Smooth”

“Landscape – From One Extreme to Another”

“A Night Out”

“From Whimsy, to Fantasy Surreal”

“Landscape – From the Tranquil to the Expressive”

Once, I have decided on a theme for a class, I then select a title, then the artists whose work best expresses the title. The selected artists are then used as “creative role models”. Thus giving the students an insight into both the artist’s technical and creative means they have employed in their work.

These are some of the artists we have looked at.

Russell Drysdale, Bett Whiteley, Grace Crossington-Smith, Margaret Olley, Shay Docking, Edward Hopper, Jeffry Smart, Monet, Dali, Toulouse-Lautrec, Clarice Beckett, Godfrey Miller, Dorrit Black, Patrick Caulfield, Chagall, Picasso, Klimt, Seurat, Van Gogh, Donald Friend, John Rigby, Magritt & William Robinson.

I hope you take pleasure in looking at the work and maybe finding some of the “creative influences” I have mentioned?
