Eryka Garbutt | Artist Talk – Waste Not

Join Artist Eryka Garbutt for the last week of Waste Not…..

Mixed Media Artist – Eryka Garbutt is known for her marvellous mind and for finding new ways to reuse or recycle materials in her many art forms.

Pendant | Cutlery | Eryka Garbutt

This is a wonderful opportunity to see a more focused body of work by the artist, utilising materials often dismissed.

Recycling takes materials such as plastic, paper, metal, and glass and breaks them down so that they can be made into a new product. Up-cycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful.

Re-purposing is to change (something) so that it can be used for a different purpose. There is a fine line between the three and often they just merge. – Eryka

Works on show include Pendants made from Cutlery, Sculptures made from household items and Wall Art from Toilet Rolls.

Lady In Not So Red | Toilet Rolls | Eryka Garbutt

Eryka will be available at the Strathnairn Gallery this Saturday 22nd April throughout the day to speak about her creations and artistic processes.

Creativity is what drives an artist. The added bonus of recycling, up-cycling, and re-purposing is not only its contribution to the environment but the added bonus of the provocation to think outside the box in a practical way, but with a still aesthetically pleasing manner. Art has to stand on its own merits not capitalise on its humble beginnings. If the origins are lost in the execution, then that is a measure of its success.

Soft drink bottles, egg shells, egg boxes, toilet rolls, waste paper, beads, even outdated currency finds a place in Eryka’s artwork. Creativity means thinking outside the box. Can you imagine: flowers made from toilet rolls or plastic bottles? Cute little hat brooches made from bottle caps? Cutlery reinvented as pendants? Beads made of house insulation? This exhibition will open your eyes to the possibilities.

Waste Not is an exciting exhibition to be opened by International Mixed Media artist Joan James, inaugural Secretary General of the World Shibori Network Australia and New Zealand responsible for organising and curating exhibitions in Paris, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

Eryka Garbutt, who is a local Canberran artist, is not restricted to just recycling materials but likes to explore varied mediums and techniques. Decoupage jewelry was the starting point, but wire work features heavily in her work. Crochet wire jewelry and wire wrap techniques, Viking weave, are just a few examples. She will paint on paper, silk or glass, decoupage on mixed surfaces, play with polymer clay, cast with plaster, paint with paper, using paper as a palate instead of paint and generally mix techniques and materials. Colour and texture are her main inspiration.
