Eryka Garbutt | Artist Talk – Waste Not

Join Artist Eryka Garbutt for the last week of Waste Not…..

Mixed Media Artist – Eryka Garbutt is known for her marvellous mind and for finding new ways to reuse or recycle materials in her many art forms.

Pendant | Cutlery | Eryka Garbutt

This is a wonderful opportunity to see a more focused body of work by the artist, utilising materials often dismissed.

Recycling takes materials such as plastic, paper, metal, and glass and breaks them down so that they can be made into a new product. Up-cycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful.

Re-purposing is to change (something) so that it can be used for a different purpose. There is a fine line between the three and often they just merge. – Eryka

Works on show include Pendants made from Cutlery, Sculptures made from household items and Wall Art from Toilet Rolls.

Artists in Residence – Brent Learned & Merryn Apma

Open Studio Day

Woolshed Gallery
Saturday 25th February 10 AM - 3 PM

An extraordinary opportunity to see two unique artists in residence working within their temporary studio space at Strathnairn Arts.

Brent Learned & Merryn Apma will open their doors to the public on Saturday 25th February to provide insight into their working process as well as their cultural influences.

There will also be a vibrant exhibition of works for sale.

Brent Learned is a Native American artist from Oklahoma who draws, paints, and sculpts the Native American Indian in a contemporary impressionistic style. As an enrolled member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, Learned appreciates the legacy and culture of the American Plains Indian. “I create artwork to capture the essence, accuracy and historic authenticity of the American Plains Indian way of life,” says the artist.

Merryn Apma is a highly influential Aboriginal artist who resides in Tilba NSW. Merryn opened an Aboriginal Art Gallery in August 2015 where she showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from all over Australia. A big heart within a tight knit community, Merryn has been a powerful leader for Aboriginal issues since the famous Long Walk led by former AFL footballer Michael Long from Melbourne to Canberra in 2004.

We hope you will join us in observing these two artists at work & seeing the vast contrasts as well as similarities within their process & completed works.

Come for the Open Studios then stay for the Meet and Greet in the Homestead Gallery at 3.30pm!

We hope to see you there!

Announced Today! New West Belconnen Suburb – Strathnairn

West Belconnen Suburbs Announced

Minister Berry and David Maxwell from Riverview announcing the names of the first two suburbs for the West Belconnen development – Strathnairn and Macnamara

So proud to be included in the announcement of the first two suburbs for the new West Belconnen development. Suburb number one is called Strathnairn and calls to mind the existing arts precinct and the farm which the Baird family owned and named. The naming of the suburb speaks to the inclusive nature of the new development which will border and almost curve around Strathnairn Arts in a semicircle and the sympathy between the rural creative precinct and the urban sustainable development which will see Strathnairn with new neighbours from 2018.

We look forward to this growing community and embracing them in our arts programs, workshops and exhibitions. The opportunity to influence and educate the many personalities in Strathnairn the suburb is to exciting to be left unattended.
The second suburb announcement honours a pioneering woman in the medical field Dame Annie Jean Macnamara, who is recognised and best known for her contributions to children’s health and welfare, especially in the polio area.
